Biggs never went to the city much, most of the time he spent in the base overseeing training and logistics: the everyday operations of Camp Lockheed. If ever he did go to the city he would only do it to break the monotony and the order of the camp. The rare times that order and low or the humdrum of army life began to bore him; he would look for fun, something that the army life did not offer most of the time and something that a late night in the city would. He grew up in outskirts of the city some rural close knit community that no longer existed due to relocation. He missed that life.

But now the city took a drastic change after the invasion. Where he used to see the city as concrete expanse of high rise and spires, he saw the city now as a twisted amalgamation of growth and decay. Since the invasion people abandoned the city in droves and headed to the space port hoping to get a quick ride of the planet. The resulting quick evacuation resulted the city becoming a husk in the span of two days.

Then as the days passed one something unexplainable happened. In Bigg’s mind the freak meteor shower had something to do with the strange growth that was slowly encasing the city. The growth started out first as weird plant like matter that burst out of the concrete damaging roads and causing some buildings to collapse as the structural integrity was compromised. The vines spouted afterwards, vines as thick and as large as a truck, slowly began to crawl out from the cracks in the concrete and snaked up buildings, in a seeming effort to embrace the structure or what was left of the structure. What made matters worse that these vines also sported their own leaves wide as a hockey field and smaller vines which entwined and entered the windows and doors: entering any opening like an unwelcomed stranger would. Finally weird manner of beasts came to nest.

Biggs wondered if the star fall had brought the creatures to the planet. There were news reports and public sightings of weird creature suddenly appearing. Rescued fishermen with white faces would report giant monsters capsizing boats and upsetting the sea. Park goers panicked screaming packs of gorillas on a rampage.

He read the report done by recon; there were no gorillas. Whatever creatures that came spooked the citizens of the planet were not native to the planet.

“Cpl. Biggs you need to see this.” Spoon said quickly handing him the binoculars.
“What is it private?” the Cpl. noted that Spoon looked anxious. What the officer saw astounded him.

They were creatures that loosely resembled gorillas. They had the same body structure but there were features that set them apart from ordinary gorillas of the zoo. While their bodies were covered in fur, the more vulnerable parts were covered in something the officer could be described as carapace. Their arms were as thick as the trunk of a full grown oak and the ropy sinews that betrayed harsh living environments. What astounded the corporal was these animals were working as a cohesive unit. They seemed to be formed in a mad parody of a squadron. The creatures that were on the front acted as meat shields taking the brunt of whatever was thrown at them, the ones behind took whatever debris they could find and hurled them at soldiers, which was not limited to cars or lampposts, and occasionally a truck that would cause defending soldiers to scramble for cover.

It was not however the only sightings of these creatures. From the reports he had heard there were far stranger beasts that had engaged the army at various fronts. From the shore there had been talk of beasts large enough to capsize cargo ships and oil tankers, from the forests soldiers whispered of things stalking in the shadows and picking soldiers one by one. There were many other reports, but Biggs no longer wanted to hear them and could not hear them. Any form of communication was gone. He had a hunch that the communication black out was more than coincidental with the meteor fall.

“Sir,” said the private. “I found these two hiding in the locker in the building. This crip’s name is Lars and the girls name is Aleena said they got separated from their parents when the meteor struck.

The sight of the kids softened the officer. “Hey” were the words that Biggs managed to escape the corporal’s lips.

“Will you help us find our parents…Officer, Sir…?” said Lars perched on the shoulder of the private.
